Asbestos products commonly found in houses
Asbestos Cement or AC Sheet products
- These can be internal or external, flat, patterned or corrugated
- They are not always immediately visible and are often used behind ceramic tiles in bathrooms, laundries and kitchens
- Often found behind switchboards
- Used as sacrificial formwork for concrete
- Used as shelving in cupboards
- Used for lining exhaust canopies over ovens
- Often used as packing between floor joists and stumps
Electrical switchboards can include:
- AC sheet backing or mounting board
- Asbestos millboard backing
- The switchboard panel itself e.g. zelemite
- Asbestos insulation around electrical wiring
- Fuse blankets behind ceramic fuses in switchboards
Other Asbestos products found in houses:
- Asbestos cement conduits
- Asbestos cement internal flues and downpipes
- Asbestos cement water pipes (usually underground)
- Asbestos cement moulded products, such as gutters, ridge cappings, gas meter covers, cable troughs and covers
- Asbestos cement telecoms pits
- Asbestos cement render, plaster and mortar
- Asbestos roof tiles
- Vinyl floor tiles and sheeting – it can be in the vinyl or the backing
- Blackjack glue used as vinyl adhesive
- Bitumen-based water proofing such as malthoid (typically on roofs and floors but also in brickwork)
- Bituminous adhesives and sealants
- Putties, caulking compounds, sealants and adhesives
- Door seals on ovens and heaters
- Electric heat banks – block insulation
- Electric hot water services (normally not asbestos but some millboard could be present)
- Kitchen sink – sound deadening material affixed to bottom of sink/draining board
- Chrysotile wicks in kerosene heaters
- Hairdryers – insulation around heating elements
- Ironing boards – the plate to sit the hot iron on.
