Asbestos Survey & Audit Services
Conducting an asbestos survey is the initial step in identifying and controlling the risk of asbestos exposure.
What is an asbestos survey?
An asbestos survey is the identification and assessment of Asbestos Containing Material (ACM) at your site. As part of the assessment process samples of suspect material are taken and tested to determine the presence of asbestos.
During an asbestos survey, the following details of items inspected are documented on your Asbestos Register:
- Location;
- Type of material;
- Disturbance potential;
- Accessibility;
- Friability;
- Quantity;
- Condition; and
- Risk of exposure.
The Asbestos Register helps provide the location of any asbestos material to workers, contractors and visitors to your site. Identifying the location of ACM helps prevent damage and risk of exposure to airborne asbestos fibres.
The asbestos survey report will also provide guidance on the appropriate methods for dealing with asbestos during removal or remedial works, so that they can be completed safely and without risk. In situ management and labeling of asbestos material can also be undertaken where the material is in good stable condition.
This assessment should be undertaken at least every five years in order to reassess any change in condition of the material and identify other areas that may have become accessible.
Do you need an asbestos survey?
Are you:
- In a workplace that may contain asbestos?
- Undertaking refurbishment or demolition works on a building, structure, ship or plant?
or, are you:
- A person who manages or controls a workplace or an employer at a workplace?
If you answered “yes” to the questions above then you are required under the regulations to have an asbestos survey conducted to determine the presence and condition of asbestos in the workplace.
In the case of refurbishment or demolition works you must review your existing asbestos register or have a refurbishment / demolition survey conducted. All areas that will be affected by the proposed works need to be accessed and inspected including all floors, walls, ceiling and cavities for the presence of Asbestos Containing Materials.
To help you meet your obligations under the regulations, Mairin can undertake asbestos and refurbishment / demolition surveys.
